God Wars: Future Past Review

I can’t remember the last time I got excited about throwing a rock in a video game.  That was my very first action, and I literally started giggling like a little girl.  I knew from looking at everything I saw that it was the game I had been hoping to see in the genre for the past 15 years, or so.  Not that there hadn’t been any good ones since then, but nothing quite like what I was looking for.

What you have in God Wars: Future Past is a tactical, turn-based RPG.  You have your characters, each with their specialties and skill sets, on a large map with your opposition.  Of course, they have their own devices as well. Each turn, you can opt to move your character, and do one other action, such as a standard attack, defending, using a skill, or just waiting.  Taking full survey of what’s on the field, what your enemies are capable of, and knowing your own limitations are completely necessary.  It doesn’t take much, like missing the presence of an archer at a reasonable height, or a warrior coming at you with multiple enhancements to ruin a good 15 to 20 minutes worth of work in a battle.  It sounds like you have to walk on eggshells to win a game, but you can do the same to your enemies if you build your army properly and can use the terrain well.

There can be an overwhelming amount of detail to the characters’ stats and overall game mechanics to someone who’s not used to the genre. While there is a lot to learn, the game doesn’t throw you to the wolves immediately.  They help you get off to a decent start, before you come across actual wolves, at least.  Plus you get a bear right off the bat, and we all know that wolves are allergic to bears, especially ones that have opposable thumbs, can dress themselves, and can pull off the most stylish hairstyle of the time.

The job system is what I love most about this game.  You get set characters throughout the story, and each one has their own special job class that gives them specific skills they can learn, but their main job class is up to you, and each one has its own skills to learn, range of weapons and armor to equip, and a general stat build as well.  Additionally, you can set a secondary job class to pull more skills from.  For example, if you leveled up the warrior class, learned skills in that class, then decide to become an archer, you can set the warrior class as your secondary, and have access to those class skills you had previously unlocked.  This offers a ridiculous amount of customization to your army, to help you fight battles how you see fit.

On top of all of this, the story of the game has pretty good graphics, fantastic music, and a good overall story.  The voice acting varies though in my opinion.  The important characters are done well, as they should be, but the nameless combatants and story characters come off a bit too cheesy at times, and in some instances watered down conversations with the more important characters. This is literally my only real gripe with the game, though, and I consider it pretty minor compared to everything else.

I can’t stress enough how well made this game is.  I feel as if it’s an homage to the original Final Fantasy Tactics from the late nineties, which is one of my top 5 games period.  There are differences between the two, but God Wars does a great job in filling that hole that had been left, compared to more recent titles in genre, that were just passable.
